Moscow: Indoor championships continue
The World Indoor Athletics Championships continued in Moscow on Saturday.

The World Indoor Athletics Championships continued in Moscow on Saturday. The first gold medal of day two went to Ethiopia's Meseret Defar in the women's 3000 metres final. Defar successfully defended her title in a winning time of eight minutes and 38.80 seconds, finishing ahead of Russia's world record holder Liliya Shobukhova. The host nation claimed its first gold medal of the championships in the women's triple jump. World Indoor record holder Tatyana Lebedeva set the winning mark with her first jump of 14.95 metres, which is the longest of 2006 to date. Lebedeva's compatriot Anna Pyatykh took the silver medal, while the bronze went to Yamile Aldama of Sudan. Russian successes The crowd witnessed more Russian success in the men's high jump final. Yaroslav Rybakov claimed the gold medal after clearing a season-leading height of 2.37 metres. Russia also claimed the silver as Andrey Tereshin out-performed Swede Linus Thoernblad, who took the bronze. Ivan Heshko of the Ukraine made a late attack on the way to a gold medal in the men's 1,500 metres final. Heshko left it late before winning in a time of three minute, 42.08 seconds with Kenyan pair Daniel Kipchirchir Komen and Elkanah Onkware Angwenyi taking silver and bronze respectively. Smallest of margins Ignisious Gaisah won the men's long jump by the smallest of margins. The Ghanaian out-jumped Irving Saladino by just one centimetre with a winning mark of eight metres and 30 centimetres. Italian Andrew Howe took the bronze medal with a jump of eight metres and 19 centimetres. Back on the track, Ireland's Derval O'Rourke broke her own national record for the second time in a day to win the women's 60 metres hurdles final. O'Rourke, who had already bettered her own mark in qualifying, crossed the finish line in a time of 7.84 seconds to take the gold. Glory Alozie of Spain picked up the silver medal with the bronze going to Sweden's Susanna Kallur. The men's 60 metres hurdles final followed, with Terrence Trammell bettering his effort from Friday's 60 metres final. Having taken bronze in that event, the American captured the gold in a season's best time of 7.43 seconds despite clipping all but one hurdle.
