Chennai:
Bobby Aloysius is India's biggest hope in high jumping at international championships. But a month before the World Championships in Paris, the 29-year old, five feet eight inch tall athlete is struggling to find form. Aloysius began well and cleared the 1.70 metre mark with ease while the competition struggled. But as the bar was raised, her nerves gave way. At 1.84 metres, she knocked down the bar and just could not recover. Aloysius is looking to qualify for the World Athletic Championship in Paris next month for which she needs to clear 1.92m. "I have to concentrate more on technique rather than my power and speed. My speed and power is enough to go to 1.95 but I have to get proper technique," said Aloysius. Aloysius' best performance came last year when she scaled a height of 1.90 metres. She has experimented with different styles of jumping but is still unhappy with her technique. "The high jump is a highly technical event. I have to turn in the take-off. My body has to turn a little more compared to what I am doing," she said. Aloysius is currently training in England with coach Denis Doyle. With the disappointment at the circuit meets in Bangalore and Chennai, she plans to head back to England for further training. One of India's biggest hopes for the World Championships, Aloysius has just one more chance at the National Federation Cup in Hyderabad if she is to be selected for the team.Topics mentioned in this article
